Summary:

  • A cast with pre-existing drama, unconventional relationships, and more shared history than most families.
  • Dolores Catania also shows up as a friend of.

I was not fully prepared for what Real Housewives of Rhode Island was going to deliver in its first episode. Within the opening fifteen minutes, we had an open relationship, a sister’s ex, a possible swingers situation, and a woman who married her distant relative. This show is not easing us in gently. It is throwing us straight into the deep end, and honestly? The water is warm. RHORI feels like a Gen X group chat that somehow also became an AITA post, and I am completely here for it.

Who Is the RHORI Cast? Meet the Real Housewives of Rhode Island

Before we get into the drama, let’s do a quick roll call because yes, a lot of these women look similar and yes, it is going to take a couple of episodes to keep them straight. First up is Alicia, a self-described flip-flopper who can go from cursing someone out to hugging them in the same breath. She has been engaged to Bill for nine years (nine!) and does not seem particularly bothered by that. Her aunts all live fifteen minutes away, which they treat as a long-distance relationship.

Then there is Liz, who lives in what can only be described as a castle, drinks from goblets in her confessionals, and co-owns one of the East Coast’s first cannabis dispensaries with her husband Gerry. She calls herself the Queen of Weed. Oh, and she found out six months into her marriage that she and Gerry are distantly related. She found out via a DNA test. They stayed married. That is very Rhode Island of them 😅.

Kelsey is the former Miss Rhode Island who is currently in what the show is carefully calling an “open” relationship with an older, unnamed man whose face is literally ripped out of every photo. He spends half the year in Miami with another partner. Kelsey is 31, has been with this man since she was 19, and is having an existential crisis about it all. The show seems to be setting her up as someone who got on TV specifically to get her own money and leave. We love a plan💅🏾.

Jo-Ellen is married to Gary, who used to date her sister (this is why I think this is a real-life AITA post). She has three young kids, a strained relationship with her own mum, and a mouth she freely admits she cannot always control. She is also best friends with Kelsey and Liz, which makes her the nucleus of this whole cast.

Rosie, a former news anchor turned lifestyle host, is married to a Frank Sinatra singer (not an impersonator — he is very sensitive about this) and describes herself as Nosey Rosie. She arrived at the premiere in a hot pink Jeep. Icon behavior. Finally, Ashley is the Bachelor in Paradise alumna who moved to Rhode Island for her husband Jared, who owns a coffee shop.

Liz McGraw Is Already the Best Thing on RHORI

Can we talk about Liz for a second? Her intro package opens with her walking her cat on a leash. It ends with her hopping into a dinghy to go meet Kelsey at a restaurant. In between, she casually mentions the DNA situation, pours from a goblet, and drops the phrase “where the berries are bodied” when talking about Dolores. She is chaotic, self-aware, and immediately compelling. Liz looks so much like Dolores Catania from RHONJ that viewers are losing their minds over it, which makes even more sense when you find out they use the same surgeon and dentist. Bravo put two Doloreses on one screen and called it a series premiere. Respect.

Who Is Kelsey Swanson’s Mystery Boyfriend?

This is the storyline everyone will be talking about. Kelsey’s boyfriend is never named. His face is ripped out of photographs. He is significantly older, comes from one of Rhode Island’s most prominent families, and has at least one other serious partner in Miami. Kelsey insists this is not a sugar baby situation because she is genuinely attracted to him. She also insists their arrangement is sacred. Meanwhile, the man has a whole other girlfriend in another state.

Kelsey is now 31 and questioning everything. She wants commitment and a real relationship. The show introduced all of this in the first fifteen minutes, which tells you exactly where this storyline is going. The smart money says she is on this show to figure out her exit. Either way, the mystery of who this man is has already sent the internet into a full investigation, and we are only on Episode 1.

Jo-Ellen vs. Rosie: RHORI’s First Big Rivalry Explained

The central conflict of the premiere is already cooking nicely. Rosie brought a cheap bottle of wine — $6 dollars, to be exact — to Jo-Ellen’s event. Jo-Ellen said some things behind Rosie’s back that were not kind. Rosie heard about it, repeated them back to Jo-Ellen’s face at the picnic, and added the rumor that Jo-Ellen might be a swinger. Jo-Ellen’s response was essentially: I do not remember saying that, but I do feel that way. Which is genuinely one of the best lines a first episode of any Housewives show has ever produced.

What makes this rivalry work is that both of them are messy in roughly equal amounts, and neither of them is pretending otherwise. Rosie admits she is nosey. Jo-Ellen admits she has a big mouth. The difference is that each thinks the other is worse, which is exactly the energy a new franchise needs to get off the ground. By the end of the episode, Jo-Ellen had invited Rosie to her Fourth of July party as an olive branch. Rosie brought fireworks. Literally.

Ashley Iaconetti and Jared Haibon Join RHORI: How Are They Fitting In?

Ashley is the wildcard of this cast. She is the only one who is not originally from Rhode Island, she is the youngest energy in the group, and she keeps telling people she met her husband on Bachelor in Paradise, while none of the local women particularly care. Jared is running a coffee shop that is the second-highest-rated celebrity-owned restaurant in the area, and he is very much working a shift while Ashley is trying to gossip with him about the drama. He is calling out coffee orders mid-conversation. It is chaotic in the most relatable way.

Ashley is clearly still adjusting to being the new girl in a group where everyone else has thirty years of shared history. She brings a different energy — more anxious, more eager to connect — and it sits a little awkwardly against the older, more settled women around her. That friction is going to be interesting to watch develop over the season. But, if it continues, I don’t think Bravo will keep her or demote her to friend status.

Does RHORI Have What It Takes to Be a Top Bravo Franchise?

Based on this premiere, yes. The thing that makes early Housewives seasons so good is genuine pre-existing relationships, and RHORI has that in abundance. These women did not just meet at a Bravo casting call. They grew up together. Their husbands dated each other’s sisters👀. Their kids are in the same schools. The drama has roots, and that is everything.

The cast has not yet learned how to self-produce, which is also a major plus. Nobody is setting up a neat little conversation to deliver a talking point. They are just being themselves, which is messy and funny and occasionally unhinged. Several viewers noted this premiere gave more in forty-five minutes than RHOBH has managed in entire seasons lately, and that is not an unfair comparison.

The one challenge is the casting similarity, a lot of dark-haired women with similar aesthetics in the same age range, which made for a slightly confusing first episode. But strong personalities sort that out quickly, and by the end of Episode 1, most of them were already distinct enough to track. Give it two or three episodes, and you will wonder why you ever confused them.

Rhode Island Did Not Come to Play

The Real Housewives of Rhode Island walked into its premiere like it had something to prove, and it delivered. The relationships are real, the drama is already personal, and the cast has the kind of lived-in chaos that takes other franchises multiple seasons to build. Liz is an instant icon. Kelsey’s storyline is genuinely intriguing. Jo-Ellen and Rosie are going to have one of the better first-season rivalries we have seen in a while.

And we have not even met Rulla yet. If the previews are anything to go by, she is going to blow the whole thing wide open. RHORI airs Sundays at 9 PM ET on Bravo and streams on Peacock. Do yourself a favor and watch.
