The Face of Pop In The 80's
I sit here and think back to my childhood, I was twelve and my brother was a year younger. The year was 1996, my brother and I were out of school for the summer, and were making one of our weekly quest to the Dollar General on the other side of Friarsgate, the small neighborhood we lived in. We went to buy candy and snacks with whatever money we could produce through the week, (picking change from the couch or doing random task for the neighbors around us), for the Saturday afternoon movie marathon that played on Fox. Our father did not believe in an allowance, forcing us to earn for ourselves, however with four children and little income this was understandable. The trips were always an adventure to us, making our way to the neighborhood tennis courts, then using a path behind it to get onto the railroad tracks that ran through the neighborhood and led us the rest of the way to shopping center where our destination was.

An Ode' to The 50's
Where “Grease Is The Word”, Poodle Skirts are in, and the Pink Ladies had Cool Guys in Black Leather Jackets and slicked back hair falling head over blue suede shoes.. The 50’s were a time of rock and roll; embedded in the hearts of hopeless romantics, and Pops Diner day dreamers.

I Long For a Return of the 'Cary Grant Style’
Unless you’ve watched the TV Series “Mad Men”, you may not realize men used to dress so much more stylishly (and in my opinion, more attractively). The last time I was out about town, the only man I saw wearing a hat was a yellow baseball hat, turned the wrong way. Instead of being dressed up, he had a t-shirt with large letters that said, “Got Milk?” His look was completed with a gaudy chain and sloppy jeans that were three sizes too big; along with high-top tennis shoes in multiple colors. Both his hat and his sneakers looked like they would glow in the dark. Sexy? NOT! Oh, how I long for the day before t-shirts that are walking billboards; when men had class and style! If I could have one fashion wish, iit would be to bring back classy suits and Fedoras for men.

Bring Back the High-Waist Belt!
Whenever I hear about returning fashion trends, I hope and pray that these do not include the resurgence of low-rise jeans. That look was popular during my high-school days, which were entirely consumed with worrying about my stomach flab and constantly tugging at my belt loops until they broke. I know there must be a few people out there who would disagree with me, but in no world would I ever consider the muffin top - plumber-butt duo a good fashion trend! I was very glad when the low-rise waist quickly changed to the opposing high-waist option. But so common is it for us to bicker over pant rise. My favourite fashion trend does not focus so much on pants, but what goes on top! Some may think I’m a little unstable for wanting to see this trend return, but I just can’t deny my true love…

Let's Go Back To The Days of The 1980s
The 80s is my favorite decade, I never got to experience that being born in 1995, but I can appreciate what that decade did for ten years in the transition from the 70s. When I was little, my mother still had her clothes from her days in the 80s. I got to see her bright colored shirts and puffy sleeve dresses. I got to wear her scarlet shoulder padded dress around the house. As I got older, anything I wanted was on my retro radar from music to movies. I listened to the one hit wonders and watched all the movies to see the styles. For two years in a row at my high school for the decade day of spirit week, I dressed up as Don Johnson from Miami Vice. I wore white pants, a bright blue shirt and a neon green blazer, and of course, I had a pair of ray bans to finish the look. If there is a style that I want to see make a comeback in the trends, its the looks of the 1980s.

I can’t do my buttons!
Do you know how memories can just come and smack you in the face unexpectedly? Last weekend I was in the midst of a perfect storm. Grieving the recent loss of my father and wallowing in self pity, I had begun hating my reflection and feeling as heavy as an elephant. In a snap decision I decided to break out the comfiest and least fashion forward outfit in my wardrobe. A simple pair of black denim dungarees.
