A Brutal Mission Inside The Virgil
They Will Kill You is a relentless horror thrill ride starring Zazie Beetz as Asia, a woman fresh out of jail searching for her baby sister after attempting to kill their abusive father. While in prison, Asia learned how to defend herself—she became a total badass—and that will come in handy when her search leads her to an upscale apartment complex known as The Virgil.
The Virgil has stood for over a century, earning a reputation as a place where people move in… but rarely move out. This is especially true for the cleaning staff—mostly minorities, formerly homeless women, abuse victims, and runaways—people whose disappearances might go unnoticed.

A Cult Hiding in Plain Sight
Taking the place of The Virgil’s most recent hire, Asia infiltrates the building, ready to burn it down if that’s what it takes to rescue her sister Maria (Myha’la). But she doesn’t really understand what she’s up against.
The residents aren’t just rich, over-privileged elites—they are that—but they’re also something far more dangerous.
Heather Graham, Tom Felton, and Patricia Arquette serve as the polished public face of The Virgil’s clientele, hiding a deeply sinister secret. Avoiding spoilers, it’s fair to call them a cult operating within a supernatural framework. The rest is best discovered firsthand.

Kinetic Direction and Stylish Chaos
What stands out immediately is the pace—it’s breathtaking. First-time feature director Kiril Sokolov shows a clear love for camera movement, using it to inject energy into nearly every scene.
Sokolov and cinematographer Isaac Bauman often feel like inventive filmmakers pushing their tools to the limit, experimenting with motion and framing to see just how far they can go.
That kind of visual ambition can sometimes overwhelm a story, but here it’s mostly reserved for the action. Combined with sharp editing from Luke Doolan, the film’s kinetic style elevates each sequence, especially the fight scenes, which consistently build momentum.

Gory Fun with a Playful Edge
It’s clear the filmmakers are having fun—and that energy translates. Each sequence tries to top the last, culminating in standout moments involving a flaming ax and even a talking severed pig’s head.
Despite its excess, They Will Kill You doesn’t feel derivative. Ultra-violence and flashy camerawork aren’t new to horror, but the difference here is intent. The film shows care in how it deploys its style—it isn’t just noise for the sake of noise.

Simple Story, Strong Execution
At its core, the story is straightforward. Asia’s goal is clear, and the obstacles she faces rarely strain the internal logic of the film’s world.
It’s basic filmmaking—setup, stakes, escalation—but executed with enough passion, skill, and a playful sense of gory wonder to elevate They Will Kill You beyond just another exercise in style and violence.

Final Verdict
They Will Kill You thrives on energy, style, and controlled chaos. It may not reinvent the genre, but it knows exactly how to deliver a thrilling, blood-soaked ride—and that confidence makes all the difference.
