parents
The boundless love a parent has for their child is matched only by their capacity to embarrass them.
The Incredible Eliza Kim
During the Korean War, young Korean girls were having babies with a lot of young soldiers. Mixed children were seldom accepted (especially those of African American and Korean descent) and the new mothers had to choose. Some kept their babies, trying to raise them on their own, often being disowned by their families. Some abandoned them on the street after realizing they could no longer care for them when they became ill. Others, like my mother's mother, chose the route of infanticide.

a place to call home
When I was a child, I didn’t notice that we were different. I didn’t notice that other mothers didn't wear miniskirts and leather jackets to parents evening. I didn't notice that other children weren’t taken on these insane thrilling holidays at least twice a year, where there would be dancing, laughing and crying and feeling truly connected to the world and everyone in it. I didn’t notice how other people's homes didnt have 713 books, five guitars and six cats. I thought everyone’s mum was special, a philanthropist and moved mountains and their actions aligned with their values. Today you can find my mother in our cosy London flat which has art covering every inch of space and books spilling off shelves and onto the floors and tables. We have a pile of bills and receipts living on our sofa, which my mother will sometimes shred. Her books range from French philosophy to art encyclopedias, but most are psychology books that helped her out of some dark places and which now help me on my journey. My mother’s name is Cina.

To the Woman who changed my life: Thank you.
Its 1am, I’m crying loud enough for the whole of England to hear. The nightmares have taken over again for the third time this week and this time it's impossible to forget. For a brief moment I feel like I'm alone, the little 7 year old me is frightened and needs comfort. And for the slight moment of loneliness I felt not long ago, it is now replaced with a warmth when a hand is stroking my head, telling me it is all a nightmare and she is there to keep me safe. Then, with the lullaby of Que Sera Sera, I drift back to sleep with my mother lying right next to me.

The Heart of a Woman
“FIVE-DOLLAR FRIED FISH & FRIES! GET YOUR FRIED FISH AND FRIES,” I reluctantly shouted on the street corner. The summer sun was beaming down on me. I could see the heat waves rippling through the air as people drove passed me, ignoring my offer. My mother watched as I waved our sign with very little fervor. I could hear her mumbling to herself in Creole. Her mumbles turned into extended teeth sucking, the kind only Caribbean women can produce out of frustration.

To the greatest mom ever
This is to one of the strongest and loving individuals in my life right now and that is my mom, who sometimes I refer to as mommy bear. I am truly grateful to have a mother like her, because of the sheer resiliency and strength that she shows no matter what she is going through. For always finding something to be grateful for in the midst of living through some of the most challenging moments in her life.

The Phenomenal Woman
My best friend, my confidant, my sister and the list goes on. Who is this person? She is my one and only beloved mother. I like to honor and dedicate this story to her. Few months ago as we all celebrated her 70th birthday, It got to my time to speak some words about her and could not stop myself from tearing up as I recounted all the support and inspiration she has given me to be this grown woman I am today.

MY LOVE,MY MOM
Inspire means to “breathe into” and when you breathe: Life comes forth. To be honest, I don’t know what to say, words to me though I write so easily don’t bring the recognition deserve to her. Life was something I needed, and she had the oxygen, and I began to breathe the moment she said I was chosen. DNA has no meaning, matter of fact it’s extinct, for this woman with nothing but love, made my heart beat. Weighing one pound, nine ounces, with no chance at all, she saw something great in someone so small. When doctors came with news not so good, she remained in the hope and that’s where she stood. For, other than love, there was care that ran deep for this premature baby with the cutest chubby cheeks.

Superhero Mom
Meet my superhero, the wonder of all wonder women, my beautiful mom – Phouthasinh Louangketh. Many of us honor our mothers as superheroes and indeed they are. Let me share with you the courageous act of my mother during a time of war, conflict, and years of uncertainty. My family of three – mom, my older brother, and I – embarked on a dangerous and uncertain journey that many of you have experienced in one way or another. My native country of Laos was overruled by the communist in 1975 resulting from the Vietnam era conflict. My father had been scheduled for execution, which rapidly led to his escape plan. Once of out Laos, he found a new family and did not return for us.

The Queenie Effect
She’s a straight talking, tough love giving, sassy black woman that isn’t afraid to get down and party with the youngsters because if you haven’t already heard, sixty is the new twenty-five. She’s a ball of energy that doesn’t have an off switch, a trait I can admit to have inherited and she doesn’t take shit from anyone.
