Playlist to Soothe
I first want to start by saying that I don't typically make playlists. Thankfully I have the lovely Spotify to do that for me. If I were to make my own playlist it would be a mix of different genres and songs that do not go well together. Whenever I attempted to "DJ" my friends would either say "ooh what's this song? or "what the hell are we listening to?" So my dreams of being a DJ were crushed. So I just stick to liking songs and letting Spotify categorize songs for me. But once in a while I will find songs that I have to listen to back to back to put me in a mood. There are days where I have to reset my mind before work or when I get home to put myself back in a peaceful mindset. The following songs listed below always help me do that.

No Time For Zen, Only Joyous Despair
I’ve never been one for chillhop or smooth jazz, so when I saw that there was a Vocal+ challenge for a zen playlist, I thought, “Wow, there has never been something I’ve been more wildly underqualified to be a part of.” But I’ve chewed on it a bit, and I realize that I do have my music that I unwind to. It’s stressful, fast-paced, thoroughly despairing, but it’s how I relieve the stresses of the day, and I stand by it. It’s music that makes the world make sense, and it’s a lot of different work, but ultimately, it comprises a fuller picture of me. So why don’t I share a little bit of that?

Calm Your Mind With Music
Our brains are bombarded with an assortment of thoughts and emotions throughout the day. Whether you're stressed out about making a certain deadline or an exciting new idea has taken over your mind. You are constantly working your brain to exhaustion. This can be a big problem when you finally have time to kick back and relax because you find that you just can not relax. Your mind feels like it's going a thousand miles per hour. When I was a teenager I found that meditation is the best way to calm yourself and clear your mind. Like many teenagers that grew up with constant internet, television, and any other kind of screen time. Sitting still in silence is more nerve wracking than calming. Years ago a friend had told me to research “brain wave music” because the frequency of the music does effect your brain in either a positive or negative way. So over the years I've concocted a meditation playlist composed of brain wave songs that I like to enjoy every night before bed. I try to have a variety of different frequencies that are healthy for your body and spirit while meditating. Tapping into all of the chakras as they are all important. It's also not healthy to focus on only one chakra level. Since all of these songs are very long I normally just choose one per meditation session.

Songs I Play on Repeat
It is that song you just can’t get out of your head. You hear it once, maybe twice, and the next thing you know you are humming it while you do your dishes. You start singing it in the shower—disjointed lines because you haven’t memorized it yet. Sometimes just one line repeats itself over and over and over until you simply can’t stand it. You HAVE to listen to that song again. If you were smart, you immediately searched for the song when you first heard it and added it to your Spotify playlist (or wherever you get your music). If you didn’t have the foresight, you either desperately typed those disjointed lines into Google or turned back to that radio station just hoping it will come on the radio again.

Music that has gotten me through some tough times
When 2018 started, I never thought it was going to be the year that would open the door to close to three years of stress and grief. It started off so well -- I'd had an operation that literarlly saved my life and opened my eyes to new prioroties, namely making myself feel better and not focusing al my energy on a job I'd grown to hate. But I was working on a new novel and I felt like I was in a good place creatively.

Flex Zone
As much I try to stay away from self-diagnosis (aka Dr. Google), this one is pretty clear. Symptoms include anxiety, micromanaging, placing my unrealistic expectations on others, and engaging in passive aggressive behaviors until I get my way. Yes, you guessed it. I'm a control freak. Recognizing the problem is nice, but actually dialing it down a notch and relinquishing said control? Whoo. I'm stressed just thinking about it.
