I Wrote 74 Articles on Medium: Here's What Actually Changed (And What Didn’t)
No hype, no fake income claims—just a realistic breakdown of effort, growth, and missed expectations

Article
When I started writing on Medium, I had a simple assumption:
Write consistently → get views → earn money.
It sounded logical. Almost mechanical.
Now, after publishing 74 articles, I can say the reality is more complicated and more interesting than that.
This isn’t a success story.
It’s a reality check.
1. Writing 74 Articles Doesn’t Guarantee Income
Let’s get this out of the way first.
Publishing dozens of articles does not automatically lead to money.
I’ve seen articles with:
Low views but high engagement
High views but zero earnings
Good writing that simply never got discovered
Medium is not just about writing. It’s about:
Timing
Distribution
Topic relevance
And sometimes, pure luck
If you're expecting a straight line between effort and income, you’ll get frustrated quickly.
2. Consistency Matters—But Only If Direction Is Clear
At one point, I was writing regularly… but without a clear focus.
Different topics. Different styles. No real positioning.
That slowed everything down.
Once I started narrowing down,
Writing about specific niches
Repeating themes
Building familiarity with readers
Things improved—not dramatically, but noticeably.
Consistency alone isn’t enough.
Consistency + direction = growth.
3. Some Articles Work for Reasons You Don’t Expect
A few of my articles performed better than others.
But not always the ones I thought were “best.”
Sometimes:
A simple post outperformed a detailed guide
A quick idea gained more traction than a well-researched article
A random topic connected more deeply than planned
This taught me one thing:
You don’t fully control what works.
You just increase your chances by publishing more.
4. Medium Isn’t Just About the Partner Program
Many beginners focus only on medium earnings.
That’s a mistake.
Even with 74 articles, I realized the following:
The real value comes from what Medium leads to, not just what it pays.
For example:
People discover your work
Some visit your profiles or links
Opportunities can come indirectly
In many cases, indirect income > direct Medium income.
5. Engagement Is More Valuable Than Views
Early on, I cared only about views.
Now, I pay more attention to the following:
Reads
Claps
Comments
Follows
Because those signals mean the following:
People didn’t just click—they stayed.
And on Medium, retention matters more than traffic spikes.
6. Growth Is Slow (Slower Than You Think)
This is where most people quit.
After 10–20 articles, if nothing happens, they stop.
After 74 articles, I can say:
Growth is not linear.
It looks like this:
Long periods of nothing
Followed by small jumps
Then flat again
If you’re expecting fast results, you’ll burn out.
If you accept slow growth, you’ll keep going.
7. The Biggest Shift Was Internal
The biggest change wasn’t income.
It was how I think about writing.
Before:
I focused on output
Now:
I focus on clarity
Simplicity
Real value
Writing 74 articles didn’t make me successful.
But it made me
More disciplined
More aware of what works
Less dependent on motivation
Final Thought
If you’re thinking about writing on Medium, here’s the honest answer:
Yes, it can work.
But not quickly.
Not easily.
And not just by publishing more articles.
You need:
Patience
Strategy
And realistic expectations
Because writing 74 articles doesn’t guarantee success.
But it does teach you how the system actually works.
And that’s where things start to change.
