When You Are Near

I did not know how quiet a heart could be,

until yours came close and stirred the air,

like a soft tide touching a waiting shore,

gentle, certain, always returning there.

There is a warmth that follows your name,

it lingers in rooms you have just left,

settles in corners of thought and breath,

and fills the spaces that once felt bereft.

I have walked through days that felt too long,

with skies that carried no gentle light,

yet you arrived like a whispered calm,

and turned my darkness into something bright.

Your voice, it rests where worry would sit,

it quiets the noise I cannot explain,

and in your presence I find a stillness,

as though I have stepped out of all my pain.

There is no rush in the way you stay,

no need to prove what is already true,

for in your eyes I see a knowing,

a place where I am safe with you.

And if time should wander, as it will do,

and seasons turn without a sound,

I would still choose this quiet closeness,

where your heart and mine are gently bound.

So come sit near, do not say a word,

let silence speak in the softest way,

for love is not always loud or seen,

sometimes it simply chooses to stay.
