Complex Affair

It takes two to tango

Complex Affair

You stood where truth begins to bend,

Not lover, not a faithful friend,

A space between what is and lies,

A shifting ground beneath our eyes.

No single name could hold this flame,

No simple word could fix the blame,

We spoke in fragments, half and whole,

A quiet war within the soul.

You came and went without a sound,

Yet left your shadow all around,

A presence felt, but never claimed,

A fire alive, but never named.

The hours stretched, then slipped away,

In things we feared too much to say,

Each glance a thread we could not break,

Each touch a risk we chose to take.

No right, no wrong, just endless grey,

A night that would not turn to day,

We lived inside a fragile space,

Where truth and lies would interlace.

You were the storm I could not read,

The answer to a hidden need,

Yet also pain I could not bear,

A weight too sharp, too much to share.

We built on cracks, on shifting ground,

Where silence always made the sound,

No solid place to safely stand,

Just open air, and trembling hand.

And still I stayed, I did not flee,

Though something there was breaking me,

For even pain can feel like light,

When wrapped in longing through the night.

You turned at last, you walked away,

No words remained, no will to stay,

Just echoes of what might have been,

And all the space that sat between.

A complex thing, too wild, too rare,

A wound, a pull, a dark affair,

Not love, not loss, not clean, not pure,

Just something neither could endure.
