Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Powerhouse Gabriel de Jesus dos Santos Eyes Gold at 2026 World Championships Following Top-3 Global Ranking
As the international Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) community prepares for the prestigious 2026 World IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship, all eyes are on the upcoming athletes.

Gabriel de Jesus dos Santos is ranked among the top three athletes in the world in his BJJ division, and the Brazilian-born phenom is looking to cement his legacy on the mats of the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, California, starting May 28, 2026.
De Jesus dos Santos enters the competition with a resume that few can match. According to the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) rankings, he currently sits at number three in the world in the Male Adult Purple Belt "Gi" category, specifically within the middle-heavyweight division. His climb to the top is bolstered by a staggering 18 podium finishes in recent IBJJF events, placing him not only in the top three of his weight class but also within the top 10 across all purple belt athletes globally.
A Career Defined by Consistency The journey for de Jesus dos Santos began long before his move to the international stage. In his native Brazil, he has amassed over 80 titles, a testament to the depth of talent in the sport’s birthplace. Since transitioning to international competition, he has secured 33 titles in the United States, bringing his total IBJJF-specific gold medal count to 38.
His dominance in the 2025–2026 season has been particularly noteworthy. In early 2026, de Jesus dos Santos staged a masterclass at the Austin Winter International Open, claiming first place in both the Medium Heavy and the prestigious Open Class categories. He mirrored this success at the Atlanta Winter International Open, securing double gold once again. These victories followed a stellar 2025 campaign where he dominated the Kansas City and San Antonio International Opens.
The Technical Edge Competing in the "Gi" category—the traditional form of BJJ where athletes wear a reinforced cotton kimono—de Jesus dos Santos has become known for his strategic grip fighting and technical control.
“The ‘Gi’ category requires strong grip fighting, technical control, and strategic thinking,” de Jesus dos Santos explained when asked about his specialty. “It’s one of the most traditional and technical aspects of the sport, and competing at a high level in the Gi is something that makes me very proud.”
When asked about his competitive advantage, the athlete points toward his mental fortitude rather than just physical prowess. “My advantage lies in my discipline, consistency, and relentless drive to improve. I focus on constant growth, both physically and mentally, and I never settle.”

Historical Context and Future Goals The athlete’s trajectory from 2018 to 2024 shows a steady evolution from a promising blue belt to a dominant purple belt force. His versatility has been proven across various regions—from the Salvador Fall International Open in Brazil to the New Orleans and Waco Opens in the United States.
As he prepares for the 2026 World Championship, de Jesus dos Santos remains grounded, offering advice to the next generation of practitioners.
“The journey in Jiu-Jitsu is not easy. There will be defeats, injuries, and moments when you will doubt yourself,” he said. “But if you keep training, learning, and believing in the process, the rewards will come. Maintain discipline, humility, and remember that each day on the mat is a new opportunity to evolve.”
