The Day Reality Didn’t Feel Real

Day Reality

By Imran Ali ShahPublished 15 days ago 3 min read

It started like any other day.

I woke up to the sound of my alarm, reached for my phone, and turned it off without even opening my eyes. The room felt the same. The light coming through the window looked normal. Nothing seemed out of place.

But something felt… wrong.

At first, I couldn’t explain it. It wasn’t something I could see or touch. It was just a quiet feeling in the back of my mind, like a whisper trying to get my attention.

I ignored it.

I got out of bed, made my coffee, and turned on the TV. The news was playing, but the anchor’s voice sounded slightly off. Not different enough to notice immediately, but just enough to make me pause.

I shook my head and told myself I was overthinking.

When I stepped outside, the world looked exactly the same. Cars were moving, people were walking, everything was in its place. But as I walked down the street, I noticed something strange.

No one was talking.

People were on their phones, walking past each other, sitting in cafés—but no one was actually speaking. Not a single word. No laughter. No conversations. Just silence.

I stopped and looked around.

“How is no one noticing this?” I thought.

A man bumped into me. I expected him to apologize, but he didn’t even look at me. He just kept walking like nothing had happened.

That’s when the feeling grew stronger.

Something was definitely wrong.

I tried to talk to someone. I walked up to a woman sitting on a bench and said, “Excuse me, are you okay?”

She slowly turned her head toward me. For a moment, I felt relief.

But then she just stared.

No response. No expression. Nothing.

And then, without a word, she turned away again.

My heart started beating faster.

I pulled out my phone and tried calling a friend. The call connected, but there was no voice on the other end. Just a faint static sound, like a broken signal.

I hung up.

“This isn’t normal,” I whispered to myself.

I started walking faster, trying to make sense of what was happening. Every street looked familiar, yet something about them felt empty—like a copy of the real world, missing something important.

Then I noticed something even stranger.

The sky.

It looked normal at first glance, but when I stared at it longer, I realized the clouds weren’t moving. Not even slightly. They were frozen in place, like a picture.

I felt a chill run down my spine.

That’s when I understood.

The world hadn’t changed.

I had.

Or maybe… I was seeing something I wasn’t supposed to see.

I rushed back home, locked the door, and sat down, trying to calm myself. My thoughts were racing. Was I dreaming? Was this some kind of illusion?

Hours passed, but nothing changed.

The silence continued. The people continued acting like everything was normal.

And then, just as suddenly as it had started…

Everything went back to normal.

The sounds returned. People began talking again. Cars honked. The world felt alive.

It was like nothing had ever happened.

I stepped outside again, confused. A group of people were laughing near a café. Someone dropped something and apologized. Everything was exactly how it should be.

I walked up to the same bench where the woman had been sitting earlier.

She was still there.

I hesitated, then asked, “Excuse me… were you here earlier today?”

She smiled politely and said, “Yes, I’ve been here for a while.”

Her voice sounded completely normal.

I stood there, frozen.

“Did you notice anything strange today?” I asked.

She looked at me, confused. “No… everything seemed normal.”

Normal.

That word echoed in my mind.

I nodded slowly and walked away.

Even now, I don’t know what happened that day. Maybe it was just my imagination. Maybe I was tired. Or maybe, for a brief moment, I saw the world differently.

But one thing still bothers me.

If everything was normal…

Then why did it feel so real?
