Woman Sets Out On Hike With Friends In 1981 And Is Never Heard From Again

Where is Thelma?

Thelma Melton—known affectionately as “Polly” to those closest to her—had never been one to stay in one place for long. At 58, a retired schoolteacher with no children of her own, she shared a quiet life with her husband, Bob, in Jacksonville, Florida.

During the summer months, the pair embraced a nomadic lifestyle, traveling in their Airstream trailer to a campground in North Carolina’s Great Smoky Mountains. Polly had a deep love for the outdoors and was an avid hiker, though in recent years she had been diagnosed with high blood pressure and relied on daily medication to manage it.

With Bob nearly two decades her senior, he was often unable to accompany her on the more demanding trails. Undeterred, Polly would set out on her own or join friends, finding both freedom and solace in the wilderness.

Whenever Polly stayed in the mountains, she volunteered at a local nutrition center—a place where she had become a beloved member of the team and formed deep, lasting friendships.

On September 25th 1981, just after 3pm, Polly and two friends from the centre set out to hike a popular route known as Deep Creek Trail. It was a path she knew well, having walked it many times before—a gentle 1.6-mile trail marked by footbridges and cascading waterfalls.

At the start of the hike, Polly’s friends teased her good-naturedly about walking slower than usual. In response, she picked up her pace, quickly moving ahead and leaving them behind. As she hurried up the trail, one of them called out after her:

The friends shared a laugh as Polly disappeared around a bend just ahead. But when they reached it moments later, their amusement turned to unease—she was nowhere in sight.

Assuming she had simply quickened her pace, they continued on, expecting to catch up with her along the trail. When they reached the end without any sign of Polly, concern began to set in. Returning to her parked camper to check on her, they made a troubling discovery: she had never come back.

When Bob confirmed that his wife had not returned to the trailer, Polly’s two friends immediately headed back up the trail, retracing their steps in search of her. As they combed the path with no sign of Polly, unease quickly gave way to panic.

More than an hour passed, and the sense of dread only deepened. Another friend, along with the husband of one of the group members, joined the search, their calls echoing through the trees without reply. By 6 p.m., with no trace of Polly and fear mounting, a frantic Bob made the decision to contact the forest rangers.

An extensive search of the area soon got underway, with rescue teams pushing through the dense surrounding brush. Search dogs were brought in to assist, and the trail was closed to the public.

The dogs eventually led searchers to a fallen tree just off the path, where it was believed Polly may have stopped to rest. Nearby, investigators noted a footprint matching one of Polly’s distinctive shoes—but the trail quickly became muddled, the impression blending into those left behind by other hikers.

For the next five days, the search continued relentlessly. As crews scoured the terrain, police began interviewing those who knew Polly, uncovering several intriguing details.

When officers spoke with the minister at the church Polly attended while in North Carolina, he revealed that she had confided in him about an affair. He also recalled something unusual: shortly before setting out on the hike, Polly had asked to use the telephone—something she had never done before. According to him, she hadn’t made just one call, but had returned several times throughout the day to place multiple calls.

Despite following up on this lead, investigators were unable to trace the calls, and the identity of the person—or people—she had been contacting remained a mystery.

Polly’s disappearance took a devastating toll on her elderly husband. That very night, Bob suffered a stroke and was hospitalized, ultimately spending the remainder of his life in a nursing home.

Despite exhaustive efforts, no trace of Polly was ever found, and the case gradually began to grow cold. Then, seven months later, in April 1982, a new and puzzling development emerged: a check in Polly’s name was cashed at a bank in Alabama.

Detectives moved quickly to identify the person who had cashed it, but the lead went nowhere. The bank had no CCTV, and the teller on duty could not recall who had presented the check.

Tragically, this would prove to be the final lead in the case.

In the decades since Polly’s disappearance, numerous theories have emerged, each attempting to explain what might have happened that day.

At the centre where she volunteered, staff were expected to leave a note if they planned to return the following day. On the morning of her hike, Polly failed to do so—an unusual omission that some interpreted as a sign she never intended to come back. Coupled with rumors of an affair, it led to speculation that she may have planned to start a new life elsewhere.

Others believe Polly may have encountered foul play on the trail, crossing paths with the wrong person. Yet, at 5'11" and 180 pounds, she was a strong and capable woman—hardly an easy target for anyone attempting an abduction.

There has also been speculation that Polly may have taken her own life. Following her mother’s death a few years earlier, Bob later recalled that she had struggled with deep depression and had been prescribed medication. Although she seemed to have regained her footing by the time of her disappearance, he noticed afterward that several of his Valium tablets were missing—never to be accounted for.

Whatever happened to Polly on that September afternoon in 1981 remains an enduring mystery. More than four decades have passed without a single trace of her or any named suspect. Tragically, it now seems unlikely that the truth will ever be known. If she were alive today, Polly would be 102 years old.
