The Gardener and His White Crane: A Tale of Regret
Once, in a small, quiet village, there lived an elderly man who spent every waking hour in his garden. To the rest of the world, he was just a gardener, but to him, the trees and flowers were his family. He had planted most of them with his own hands decades ago, and he knew the personality of every single plant. His garden was the most beautiful place in the entire region a lush, green sanctuary where the air always smelled like jasmine and damp earth.
In this garden lived a beautiful white crane. The bird had made the garden its home years ago, and over time, it had become the old man's constant companion. Every morning, as the gardener started his chores, the crane would hop along beside him, its long legs moving gracefully through the fallen leaves. It would spend its day pecking at insects and keeping the plants free from pests. They had a silent bond built on years of trust. The bird never flew away when the man approached, and the man always made sure the crane had plenty of fresh water and a bit of extra food.
One humid morning, the gardener was walking through the rows of trees when he noticed something that made his heart sink. At the base of his favorite mango tree the oldest and most precious tree in the garden there was a fresh, deep hole dug into the soil. He immediately started to worry. "If something is eating the roots," he thought, "this tree won't last the season." He felt a wave of anxiety, as this tree was the pride of his life’s work.
Just as he was inspecting the damage, the white crane flew down and landed right next to the hole. Instead of its usual calm behavior, the bird seemed frantic. It began flapping its wings wildly and pecking at the dirt inside the hole, making the opening even wider.
The gardener, already stressed and worried about his tree, felt a sudden flash of hot anger. He didn't stop to think. He assumed the bird he had loved and fed for years was now the one intentionally destroying his favorite tree. In that split second, his trust turned into a feeling of betrayal. He grabbed a heavy wooden stick that was leaning against a nearby fence and lunged at the bird.
The crane, terrified, tried to fly up to a high branch, but a few moments later, it came right back down to the same spot, pecking even more aggressively. This was the final straw for the old man. Blinded by rage, he swung the heavy stick with all his might, striking the bird’s delicate wing. The crane let out a sharp, piercing cry of pain. It tried to flutter away, but it fell to the ground, its white feathers stained with red.
The silence that followed was deafening. The gardener stood there, breathing hard, the stick still in his hand. As the adrenaline began to fade, he looked down at his companion of many years, lying broken and bleeding on the grass. A cold feeling of dread began to creep over him.
He walked slowly over to the hole to see exactly what the bird had been doing. As he looked down, his blood ran cold. Coiled deep inside the roots of the tree was a large, highly venomous snake. It was clear now: the snake had been hiding there, and the crane wasn't destroying the tree at all. It had been trying to drive the snake away to protect the gardener while he worked. The bird had risked its life to save his, and in return, he had struck it down.
The gardener quickly killed the snake with the same stick, but the victory felt like ashes in his mouth. He ran back to the crane and scooped it up, but it was too late. The bird gave one last, weak flutter and then went still.
For hours, the old man sat on the dirt, cradling the lifeless bird in his hands. He cried for the friend he had lost and for the anger that had blinded him. He realized that the hole in his garden could be fixed, but the bond he had broken through his own haste and temper was gone forever. From that day on, the garden remained beautiful, but it was never quite as bright without the white crane hopping through the trees.
The Lesson
This story is a powerful reminder that acting out of sudden anger usually leads to a lifetime of regret. We often jump to conclusions when we don't understand someone's actions, especially those we care about. Before we react with a heavy hand, we must take a moment to see the truth. Decisions made in a fit of rage are almost never the right ones.
