"non-material gift of love for anniversary"

A Poor Boy’s Priceless Sacrifice on Eid

By hamad khanPublished about 17 hours ago 2 min read

“Eidgah,” written by Premchand, is a touching short story that highlights the values of love, sacrifice, and selflessness through the innocent perspective of a child. The story revolves around a poor orphan boy named Hamid, who lives with his grandmother, Amina. Despite their poverty, Hamid is hopeful and content, believing that his parents will return someday with gifts and happiness.

On the morning of Eid, the village is filled with excitement. Children are dressed in new clothes, and families prepare to celebrate the festival. Hamid, however, has no new clothes and only a few coins in his pocket—just three paise. His grandmother, though worried about their condition, sends him to the Eidgah (the place for Eid prayers) with other children, hoping he will enjoy the day like everyone else.

As Hamid walks with his friends to the Eidgah, they talk excitedly about the sweets and toys they will buy. After offering the Eid prayer, the children head toward the fair. The fair is full of colorful toys, delicious sweets, and fun rides. Hamid watches as his friends spend their money on clay toys, candies, and swings. They enjoy themselves, laughing and playing, while Hamid quietly observes.

Even though Hamid is tempted by the toys and sweets, he does not spend his money right away. Instead, he thinks deeply about his grandmother. He remembers how she burns her fingers while baking bread on the hot stove because she does not have a proper tool to handle it. While the other children are enjoying temporary pleasures, Hamid makes a thoughtful decision.

He uses his three paise to buy a pair of iron tongs (chimta). For others, it seems like a strange and boring purchase. His friends laugh at him and make fun of his choice, saying that toys and sweets would have been more fun. But Hamid proudly explains that the chimta is more useful than toys, which can easily break. He believes that his grandmother will be happy because it will protect her hands from burning.

When Hamid returns home, his grandmother is initially upset. She had hoped he would bring something to eat or enjoy for himself. But when Hamid shows her the chimta and explains his reason, she is deeply moved. Her eyes fill with tears as she realizes the depth of his love and care. In that moment, the simple iron tool becomes more valuable than any toy or sweet. It represents Hamid’s sacrifice, maturity, and unconditional love.

The story beautifully contrasts the innocence of childhood with wisdom beyond years. While other children think only of immediate happiness, Hamid thinks of his grandmother’s comfort. His act shows that true joy comes from caring for others rather than satisfying one’s own desires.

Premchand uses simple language and everyday situations to convey a powerful message. “Eidgah” teaches us that love and sacrifice are more meaningful than material possessions. It also highlights the strength of human relationships, especially the bond between a child and a caregiver.

In conclusion, “Eidgah” is not just a story about a poor boy on Eid; it is a lesson in humanity. Hamid’s choice reminds us that even the smallest act of kindness, when done with pure intention, holds great value. The story leaves a lasting impression on the reader, encouraging us to be thoughtful, selfless, and grateful for the people we love.
