The Space Between Then and Now - A is For Atom's "Out of the Blue"

A reflective, slow burning album about change, connection and the moments that quietly alter everything.

If you’ve been paying attention to the way indie rock has been drifting over the last few years, as it leans more into atmosphere, texture and emotional ambiguity rather than big, declarative statements, then perhaps A Is for Atom’s new album Out of the Blue feels right on time.

Not because it follows that trend, but because it understands the same thing: that the most interesting music often lives in the spaces between connection and more distance.

After a long stretch away, songwriter Mike Cykoski returns with a record that doesn’t try to announce itself as a comeback. There’s no grand reset, no obvious attempt to redefine everything. Out of the Blue unravels patiently, almost cautiously at times as if it’s more interested in being honest than being impressive. And this patience is exactly what gives it more weight.

Listen in here:

Across the album, there’s a clear theme running through the songs: how people find their way back to each other, or don’t, while everything else keeps shifting around them.

The title track, "Out of the Blue", sets that tone early on, capturing the moment when familiarity turns into something harder to ignore. It’s reflective, grounded in memory but aware that the present doesn’t wait around for you to catch up.

Elsewhere, the album opens out in different directions. “Closer” , a previously released single, leans more into intimacy as a conscious choice, something you have to work toward rather than assume.

“Love Birds” pulls things back even further, fragile and understated, exploring the balance between holding on and letting go. Then you have the opening track, “Babylon,” which zooms out completely, and uses broader, almost cinematic imagery to reflect on the chaos and contradictions of modern life.

What’s interesting is how naturally those shifts happen throughout the record. "Out of the Blue" moves between the personal and more general themes like its all part of the conversation, just viewed from different angles. Even "Upriver", with its mythic undertones, is grounded as it explores love, distance, the pull of home, all expressed through a slightly different lens.

Musically, "Out of the Blue" is in that comfortable grey area between indie rock and something more textured and electronic. Guitars shimmer and recede, rhythms pulse, and there’s a consistent sense of space throughout. In fact, a lot of the album’s strength comes from what it leaves out as much as what it puts in.

There’s also a noticeable shift in perspective running through the record. Without spelling it out, you can hear the influence of time passing - of responsibility, of change, of seeing things a little more clearly but not necessarily more simply.

And that’s probably the strong point of "Out of the Blue". It does not try to resolve the tension that it creates, but it allows it to exist between past and present, between certainty and doubt, in the chaos of today's world. It trusts that the listener will meet them there.

Where much of indie music is going after immediate effect, this is certainly an album that takes its time. Once it settles in, it is the kind of music that quietly sticks around and reveals a little more of itself each time you come back around to it.

About A is For Atom

A Is for Atom is the long running indie rock and electronic project of New York based musician, producer and songwriter Mike Cykoski. An NYU graduate with a Master’s in Music Technology, Cykoski has also studied at Juilliard, Harvest Works and Dubspot, giving him a rare blend of classical foundation, experimental curiosity and electronic fluency.

Since launching the project, A Is for Atom has evolved from literate indie rock roots into a more fluid sound that incorporates drum machines, layered synths and modern production techniques without sacrificing depth. His music balances structure and spontaneity, technical precision and instinctive creativity.

Cykoski has performed extensively across the U.S. and internationally, with notable appearances in Ireland, Mexico City, Toronto (including NXNE and Canadian Music Week), New York City and Austin. His releases, including the EPs Song for You and Last Man on the Moon, have earned consistent critical praise.

More recently, his work reflects a deeper sense of perspective shaped by personal growth and parenthood. Whether working with dense electronic textures or stripped back arrangements, his focus remains firmly on serving the emotional core of each song.
